Description/Abstract

In this work, rigorous thermal analysis is done for the first time based on the link between Ansoft HFSS and ANSYS. High-frequency results obtained from HFSS including surface loss density and volume loss density are imported into ANSYS. The thermal analysis run into ANSYS incorporates accurately the non-uniform power distribution in the microwave structure and hence predicts very well the thermal map for high-power applications. Experimental results confirm the developed approach.

Hi,
I'm note sure if this is the right forum so bear with me. Basically I run a lot of FEM (finite element method) software such as Ansoft HFSS. It eats RAM like crazy so I already know that I'm going to need a gig or more. Dual processor is a must.
Question:
AMD or Intel? (And if Intel which chipset? RDRAM is still too expensive, right?)
The AMD solution has gotten a lot of good reviews but SPECfp performance isn't up to par with the Xeons. But does SPECfp really give me the whole truth? Looking at the programs that are used in this benchmark it certainly looks good. Lots of FEM and field solutions are calculated. Just what I need. But... I don't think Ansoft has optimized their code for P4 which Intel undoubtedly did before they submitted the SPECfp scores. So maybe AMD is still the way to go since the instruction mix is more traditional x86? But I'm sure AMD compiled their own SPECfp suite as well and they weren't able to beat the P4. So maybe the Xeon is faster after all?
Obviously this is a production system so there will definately not be any OC'ing or running XP's instead of MP's. Stability = good.
I hope someone with experience in EDA can shed some light on this.
Thanks,
Magnus
